The Ministry of Education (MoE) embarked on a complex journey – developing a digital and data strategy for the entire education sector, alongside key stakeholder agencies. Our challenge was to translate this intricate strategy into a visually compelling and actionable document that resonated with both the MoE and their partners.

We embraced a Te Ao Māori approach, fostering collaboration to connect the strategy's themes to a core, impactful idea. The whakatauāki (proverb) "Te mātāpuna o te whakaaro" (the wellspring of knowledge) became the guiding light. It symbolises the flow of digital knowledge and learning – a reciprocal exchange between educators, students, and the wider community. This continuous learning fosters connectedness and empowers learners and educators to thrive in a digital world.

The MoE's Connected Ako team, tasked with developing the 10-year strategy, saw the need for a clear, impactful narrative. We co-created a storytelling framework grounded in Te Ao Māori principles, ensuring the strategy was distinct, ownable, and culturally relevant.

The outcome? A single-page visual summary that presented a clear picture of the strategy for all audiences. We simplified the language, ensuring it remained impactful and easily understood at a glance.

Our collaboration extended beyond the initial document. We created a library of visual assets for the MoE to use. As well as this, we developed a series of human-centric video stories that showcased the practical application of the strategy's pillars. These videos brought the strategy to life, adding a relatable touch to the campaign.

This project exemplifies the power of collaboration and storytelling. By translating complex ideas into a clear and visually engaging format, we empowered the MoE to confidently share their vision for the future of digital learning in Aotearoa New Zealand.

The puna (wellspring) represents continuous digital innovation, technology and connection.
We represented the pillars of the strategy through carefully crafted icons.
The key piece in the work was the distillation of the strategy to a single page artefact that could be widely distributed.

Ten video stories were created to explain the strategy pillars. Each focused on stories that were evidence of how the strategy could work in the real world.
We used an off-camera, interview style to capture the narrative from our key talent.
Careful construction of the narrative was developed by eliciting the responses we needed from the interview we filmed of our subjects.

The whole strategy came to life through a series of video stories that highlighted different outputs of the strategy in very real ways. Rather than creating scripts we let the people involved tell the stories in their own words.
